Pros and Cons of Hardwood and Laminate Floors

When moving into your new home, or remodeling your current home, choosing the right floors is one of the most important points on your plan. That’s why educating yourself on the different styles of floors is the best thing you can do. Let’s begin with clarifying the differences of hardwood and laminate floors.

First, there are two different types of hardwood floors: solid hardwood and engineered hardwood.

Solid Hardwood:
Comes right off of the tree and then is sanded, finished, and polished.

Engineered Hardwood:
Real wood layered for strength.

The difference between these two pieces of wood is engineered hardwood floors can be glued to a slab, while solid hardwood cannot be glued to a slab because it will get soaked and ruined. The inside of an engineered piece of hardwood is made up of plywood, stacked crisscross on top of each other, with the top layer being a hardwood surface. It can withstand impact and is resistant to moisture. Because of the added strength, it is a good choice over solid hardwood.

Laminate, on the other hand, is not real wood. It is under the category of cardboard. Laminate floors are made up of a fiberboard under high pressure. Because of this, these floors are very durable, but, like everything else, it has a limit. If water is left on laminate floors for a while, it will swell up on the edges. If comparing durability, laminate flooring is better over hardwood flooring.

Now, I know you’re wondering, “Well, which floor will benefit me and my home the most?” Good question. Here are the answers:

Hardwood Floors:
Bring a unique warmth and texture to your home
Repairable with refinishing if scratched
Adds to your home’s value
Expensive and need to set up for long term upkeeping and refinishing
Noise level can be higher with wooden floors
Shows wear and tear

Laminate Floors:
Easy installation
Easy to clean and maintain
Durable and stain resistant
Not real wood
Slippery when wearing socks
Not sandable or refinishable

Now that you have clarity of mind, you can make the best decisions that will impact your home, your family, and your future in the most pleasurable way possible. Enjoy your floor shopping spree!
