What color to paint my ktichen cabinets?

in Kitchens and Baths

I live in San Antonio in an apartment. I have the beige appliances, but I would like to paint the cabinets for it to look updated. What would you recommend?

Here's some more information about the room and adjoining room:

  1. There are no windows in the kitchen to get that perfect sunlight.
  2. The countertops are beige and we will not be replacing them.
  3. The floor has just been replace with tile blocks. The color scheme is like marble in a combination of a terra cotta color mixed with a olive green and a warm tan.  Remember it’s a marble mixture of these colors.
  4. As for lighting, we have those light covers and we use soft light of 60 w to 75w.
  5. The room that connects with the kitchen is a light tan almost like a light shade of a sun tone. I have black furniture in that room along with a black dining room table and the chairs and bar stools that I have are black leather seats with a cherry oak on the legs of these chairs.

Need help picking a paint color

I have a split level open kitchen/FR. The kitchen color is Lime green on the vaulted walls & ICI Paint, Comtemporary white- applicances are stainless & black. Comtemporary white is on one small wall the comes down the stairs into the FR. The carpet is a light gold sculpture, the couch is chinese red, the walls are painted ICI 'Coconut.'

I would like to change the room color to something comtemporary, sophisticated, not too dark or bold that also would compliment the kitchen. The FR is 27 x 17 with a 9' patio door. Should I paint the 3 walls the same color? The comtemporary white is just ok on the small wall but seems that it would be too bland on the other walls.

A photos is worth a thousand words

This is very hard to visualize. Can you upload a few photos? You can do that at http://www.millennialliving.com/node/add/image. It's free.

Two paint colors for kitchen cabinets

Here are two colors to consider:

First Color
The first is a green shade by Benjamin Moore's new Aura paint called Elemental AF-400. We actually used it on kitchen cabinets that we recently painted. See it at http://www.millennialliving.com/content/paint-colors-and-stains-kitchen-.... It's the last photo. Honestly, the photos don't do the color justice. I can send you more photos if you like.

Our ratioale here is to add some color, but not something that is too dark because there's no natural light.
This green may be worth a look. The reasons why we think it might work for you are as follows:

The floors were like you described and had a hint of green to them.
The appliances were white
The countertop was white cream color
The kitchen had a window but didn't get a lot of light

The paint color on the wall was Behr Antique White in an eggshellf finish. Get the Aura paint for the kitchen cabinets in a satin finish and also see http://www.millennialliving.com/content/paint-sheet-samples-can-be-misle...

Second Color
The second color is a much darker brown. It's Benjamin Moore's HC-71 Hasbrouck Brown for the ktichen cabinets and 1524 Nature’s Scenery for the walls. This might work if you have some very bright lights but IO think it may be way might be way too dark.

If none of these colors strikes a cord with you, then take a look at our colors for kitchens for more ideas.

How to Decide
I suggest that you follow our guidance at and actually live with the colors in your cabinets for a few days. Just paint some poster sheets or get paint board testers and tape as many as you like on the cabinets to see how they
look. I hope this helps. Also try the colors in other rooms in your house that you may want to paint.

Finally see the other articles on choosing color. at http://www.millennialliving.com/choosing-colors. Let us know what you decide. Other suggestions from the community are welcome.
