Quick drying Polyurethane on Steps

in Introduce Yourself or Your Problem
My husband and I just replaced our stairs. We have already stained them, but our problem now is:
1. Our bedroom is upstairs
2. We both work
3. We have 3 dogs and 2 cats
Is there anything we can do to be able to go up and down the stairs (even barefoot, if need be)? Can we put down a wax paper while the polyurethane dries?
Please help. I love the way the stairs now look, but unfortunately, we do not have the room or space to live downstairs and confine the animals.

Really a good blog to post

Walking on recently stained stairs
Mos hardwood floor refinishers will tell you to keep of the floors for several weeks to allow them to cure properly. The idea is to keep dirt and pressure off of the steps. Don't go barefoot. Instead, I would use white gymn socks only when walking up and down those stairs. That will cushion the surface and prevent damage and dirt.
As to the 3 dogs and 2 cats, I'm not really sure what impact they would have other than tracking dirt and water. If they are out a lot, you can put up a barrier (like a kids barrier) to keep them off the steps.
I remember when I was growing
I remember when I was growing up contractors used to put on a a light brown paper on the floors so that we could walk up and down the stairs. Is that feasible?
Brown paper will work on floors
Sure it will protect the floor from scuf marks but socks are better. Also check the label of the polyurethane can for what it says about the drying and curing time.
Thank you Tom. I am just
Thank you Tom. I am just trying to do the best I can to protect these stairs. I can restrict the dogs but the cats are not that easy, so if I can lay down the paper, that will give me a bit more metal relief.
I have read that the water base is better to use when you have animals and is a quicker drying polyurethane.
