Even if you already have your great room decorated in a style that you and your family enjoy, there are times when you'd like to add a little additional flair to the room, or give it a few instant pick-me-up touches. There are many things you can do quickly to add additional warmth, charm and functionality to your great room, without taking a lot of time or spending a lot of money doing it.

Fresh Paint

One of the least expensive things you do to a room that has the biggest overall effect is to give the room a fresh coat of paint. A new paint color can brighten the room, or even give it an entirely different look and personality. While painting the room isn't something you can do instantly, it could easily be a weekend project that would give your great room a great new look.

Furniture Arrangement

Often, when people think of redecorating a room, they think they need to replace the furniture. This is rarely the case, and often you can

create a whole new look just by utilizing the furniture you already have in a different way. Changing the furniture arrangement in the room set a whole new mood, and can even change the way your family utilizes the room. For example, if your great room has a fireplace, but the furniture is not arranged around it, it's possible that you are not getting full enjoyment from the fireplace. Picture the fireplace surrounded by a couch, a chair or two, and perhaps an ottoman or table. A trunk or chest can double as a coffee table that can also store cozy blankets or books and board games that the family can enjoy together. Without spending any additional money, or doing anything other than moving the furniture, you have created a whole new way of enjoying the room.

New Focal Point

Sometimes all a room really needs is a few interesting new pieces, such as an area rug, a great piece of framed art, or some accessories in an eye-catching accent color to provide a quick pick-me-up. For example, if the room has an overall neutral color theme, an area rug that contains some neutral shades in addition to a bright accent color can be effective. You can then pick up the accent color in other accessories around the room, such as a vase, curtain toppers, or table runner or tablecloth. Adding some colorful tapestry throws to the top of end tables can instantly create a splash of color and interest as well.

More Light

Another way of quickly adding a new look and mood to your great room is through lighting fixtures. If your room already has overhead lighting, you can make it cozier by adding some other types of fixtures, such as a tabletop lamp, or perhaps a floor reading lamp beside a comfortable chair, creating a cozy corner to curl up with a good book. Candles and lanterns also add a nice touch for the evening, and by adding a dimmer switch to the overhead lighting fixture, you can adjust the mood of the room with the turn of a dial.
