pendant lighting

I am building a five foot long by three feet wide island. It has 24inch cabinets and a 12 inch overhang for bar stools (I am hoping to fit four stools?). How many mini pendants do I need and where do I hang them? I read it should not be center, but should it be centered when excluding the measurement of the overhang?
