    Popcorn ceilings, also called “acoustic ceilings,” were popular from the 1950s through the 1980s. Affordability was one of the reasons for the proliferation of this type of ceiling. They were cheaper to add because they could be sprayed on with more ease and efficiency than when painting a ceiling.The process also masked defects or stains in the ceilings of older homes, and was thought to aid in noise reduction. Unfortunately for homeowners,popcorn ceilings also often contained asbestos, which was found to be hazardous and cancer-causing.
